2 Duckling Souls

This is an acrylic on loose canvas from a photo I took.  The two mallard ducklings didn't survive, but are alive forever in this painting.  They were about three days old at the time.

This art is available as a print on Fine Art America.  I haven't decided to put it anywhere else yet except in offline shows.

Del Mar Stilt

This is an acrylic painting on unstretched canvas 9 x 12.  It is one of my favorites this year.  If you would like to purchase a print, let me know.  It's also available on Fine Art America.  See blow for a link to my page.

I used a blurry photo I took of a black-necked stilt in Del Mar and made it to a painting.  I use a very limited palette with only a few different tubes of paint.  Mostly two types of blue, one type of red, yellow, two types of brown and white.

Duckling running

Since I had the paints out, I decided to do a companion to Mama and Five Ducklings with the acrylic painting of a duckling running.  I'm also doing another duckling painting with a dark colored duckling.

Jill the Goose, finished

My 20 x 20 acrylic painting of Jill the goose is finished.  I don't think I can do much more to it.  It's also painted on the sides.  I don't know if I'm going to show it this year, though.

George the killdeer

I just completed this painting that I will make into George the Killdeer's new avatar and icon.  I may remove the yellow background for some projects and items.  This was done in acrylics on a loose canvas pad sheet.

Firecracker, the killdeer chick

I just finished this colored pencil drawing of "Firecracker" the killdeer chick that likes to run.  I plan to put it along with my other colored pencil killdeer chick drawing on items on Cafepress.  If you want to see my Cafepress art store, you can click here:

Independent duckling

Acrylic on paper.  This is one of five little mallard ducklings I saw back in May.  Four stuck together and stayed with mom while this little run ran up to me and stood at my feet.

You can buy things with this picture on Cafe Press in my store, Just Ducky by Darlene.

Japanese Brush Painting Class

Today, I went and took a Japanese brush painting class at the Tijuana River Esturarine National Research Reserve.  It was International Migratory Bird Day today.   I've never done this type of painting before.  The paper was all crinkly from shrinking due to the water and wet paint.

Above is my bird on a branch, below are my practice birds.  I had to learn how to do the brush strokes as handling a brush is much different in this type of painting than it is in my traditional type of painting:

Don't laugh at this next one.  This was a long-billed curlew done in a different style.  Unlike realistic western art, this type of art depends more on brush work than on realism.  I know this isn't the best Japanese brush painting of a curlew, but it is my very first one.

Crow

I just finished this 11 x 14 drawing of a crow that I started at the San Diego Audubon Bird Festival a few weeks ago.  We were told to draw the crow and not do any erasing.  I took a picture of the model to finish it up at home.  It's done in Prismacolor pencil.

Killdeer painting in progress

Here is a photomerge that I did on the current killdeer painting in progress. It will be an 18 x 24 acrylic painting. It's very challenging for me because I don't usually do water and I am trying to put a lake in the scene. Also, I've never done killdeer before, except the chick in colored pencil.

Some pictures from Weekend Drawing Events

Here are a couple of pictures from weekend drawing events on the website Wetcanvas.com. These are both after working two hours.

The weekend drawing event is where someone posts several photos and you have to pick at least on of those photos within 30 minutes. Then, once you've picked one, you work for two hours and then show your work on the site. You can then finish the piece, or which I haven't done, yet, with these two.

Both of these are in colored pencil. The sushi is from this weekend's WDE and the landscape is from one at the end of February 2010.

I think it's good to work on different subjects, especially when I am thinking of trying to get into graphic design.

Breceda Sculptures in Borrego Springs

I've been writing a lot about these sculptures in Borrego Springs and posting in on Gather. I thought I would post a few here, one at a time, until I can post some of my own artwork.

These sculptures were created by Ricardo Breceda and are placed all over Galleta Meadows in Borrego Springs, California. Here are some sheep sculptures:

I think I am going to call it done for now, save a few improvements in case I want to show it. It's 9 x 12 colored pencil on paper.

Update on my Kitty Drawing

In case you didn't see it on Gather or Wetcanvas, here is an update to my colored pencil drawing that I am doing. I am going to put it aside for now. Yes, I know there's a lot of work that can still be done, but I want to move on to other things.

I am actually working on this very slowly and don't know when it will be done. This is going to be a 9 x 12 colored pencil on Strathmore paper. I got the image from the Wetcanvas image library.

Here is that painting I finshed based on an area in the Morongo Valley Preserve north of Coachella Valley. It is 8.5 x 11 on canvas paper.
